Building Permits and Inspections
If you are considering remodeling your home or business, adding an arbor or fence to your yard or a new roof or retaining wall, be sure you or your contractor applies for a building permit first. Plumbing, mechanical or electrical work; irrigation systems, swimming pools or hot tubs; signs and banners; accessory buildings or demolitions; and driveways, patios, patio covers and decks also require building permits.

Contractors must call 811 for line locates
All contractors applying for Right of Way Permits must be registered with the City of Terrell. Contractor registration information can be found below

All contractors must register with the City before applying for permits. A completed contractor registration packet will include the following: a completed Contractor Registration Application, a copy of all applicable licenses and a copy of the company's Certificate of Insurance. Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, Backflow and Fire Sprinkler/Alarm Contractors do not have to pay the registration fee, however the City will still require the completed registration packet. Contractor registration is valid for one year from the date of application.

Building Permit Applications
Work done in the City requires Building Permits. Permits generally fall into one of two categories: Residential or Commercial. Cosmetic work (painting and flooring) does not typically require permits. Permit Application review can take between 14 - 28 business days depending on the review process required to meet City standards.
All permits with an * can be issued same day.
Residential Building Permits
The following is work that requires a Residential Building Permit Application:
- *Roofing (Repair and Replacement)
- *Plumbing (Water lines, gas lines, water heaters etc.)
- *Mechanical (Repair and Replacement of Air Conditioning systems)
- *Electrical Work
- New Construction (a new home, a garage or a shed)
- *Demolition
- Addition (to a home, garage, or shed)
- Flatwork (new driveway, new concrete walkway)
- Fence
- Foundation Repair
- Irrigation (New sprinklers or repair of existing sprinklers)
- Patios/Porches
- Swimming Pools
- Solar Panels
Commercial Building Permits
The following is work that requires a Commercial Building Permit Application:
- *Roofing (Repair and Replacement)
- *Plumbing (Water lines, gas lines, water heaters etc.)
- *Mechanical (Repair and Replacement of Air Conditioning systems)
- *Electrical Work
- New Construction
- Addition

Sign Permit Application
Repairing, replacing and installing new signs all requires a Sign Permit Application. Temporary signs for advertising or Grand Openings also require a permit.
Along with all Sign Permit Application submissions, renderings showing the content of the sign, the location on the property or on the building, the size etc. will be required.
Certificates of Occupancy
Businesses operating in the City of Terrell are required to apply for a Certificate of Occupancy. After a complete application has been received, the application will go into review. Upon approval, applicants should schedule an inspection with the Building Official and Fire Marshal who will inspect the business premises to make sure everything is compliant with City Code of Ordinances. Once the inspection has been passed, a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued.
